About

Welcome to the “Gabby the Labradoodle” site.  We are NOT a large-scale breeder of Labradoodles.

In fact, the Fabian family has only ONE Labradoodle…Gabby!

And Gabby has had her

2nd litter…overnight April 17th and 18th!

Please click on the “2nd Litter” page

for details about our new babies.

The Labradoodle was first bred in Australia in the 1980s by the Tegan Park and Rutland Manor kennels for use as service dogs for individuals with a sensitivity or allergy to the dander and saliva of dogs.

Nearly 1/2 of the pups in the first litter passed the stringent testing for a formal career path as a service dog.

Pax has since left the program to become a treasured pet!

After a year and a half of rigorous training he would still occasionally “growl” at a stranger or another dog.  Altho, that’s what I want in a dog, it doesn’t work so well for a service dog.   Only 40%-45% of the dogs chosen successfully complete training and enter a life of service,

so we are very proud of our boy and the Maas family are thrilled to have adopted him from the St. Francis program.  We expect to donate another from THIS litter to the extraordinary St. Francis program.

At least one pup will go to the St. Francis Service Dog program.  These incredible folks prepare dogs to assist disabled veterans and others with special needs.   They have extraordinarily high standards and were very pleased with our pups.

Labradoodles have the loyal, tender heart of a Lab, the quick brain of a Poodle (rated by Animal Planet as the easiest breed to housebreak) and a low- to no-shed coat; some are silky, wavy, curly and even thick wool.  There are many links on this page with very comprehensive breed information.  If you think a doodle might be the dog for you, do your homework!  Meet the parents, talk to the breeder, and chat with owners of a previous litter.  There are many sweet, homeless shelter dogs who need love and stability (in fact, we foster for the Bedford County Humane Society and kept a sweet, prolific shedder just last summer.)  They make wonderful pets!   But, if you want a gauranteed really smart dog, who doesn’t make too much extra housework, will be loyal and love working with you and pleasing you, has been carefully screened for genetic health issues and comes to you well socialized…it will be expensive.  Get your money’s worth.

Labradoodles LOVE the water; they are natural retrievers since both labs and poodles were bred to be bird-hunting water dogs!  They cannot resist flying balls, sticks, frisbees or any other article you may be trying to toss away.  I often find stones in the garden, throw them into the woods and then find Gabby sitting in front of me wagging with the exact stone in her mouth!

The pedigrees of both Gabby AND Oregon, the sire, are full of strong dogs, bred for the show ring, field trials and service work. There is Champion stock in Gabby’s recent history and Oregon’s bloodline is traced to the original hybred cultivated for service work in Australia. These dogs are very easily trained and they are highly motivated to please their owner.

But you must be willing to invest the time to keep them occupied and challenged.

In fact, families who have a puppy from the first litter report that they learn fast, are wonderfully active, entertaining, playful, well-socialized and very loyal.  Check the “First Litter” page to see recent pictures and updates.  All of our first litter parents are willing to share their experience with you; they will chat (on-line) to provide you with a candid opinion of us and our puppies.  I don’t know any other breeder who will offer that.

You will see many pictures on our website of the puppies and Gabby with babies, children, cats, birds and other dogs.  They are naturally social beings, who love company and action!   And our puppies are hugged and held and loved every day that they are with us!
